Welcome to Finland

It can get confusing and the Finns can be baffling. But worry not, my friend, for those times are about to uh... Well, I can't promise they'll end but I might help you make more sense of it.

Odd culture

Swimming in almost sub-zero water, embracing the silence gaps in conversations, taking shoes off when indoors, sitting side by side naked in a small, painfully hot room while beating each other with a bunch of birch branches. All of this can be very unsettling.

Also, sweets can be deceiving when something that resembles poop is eaten as a dessert and when candies are black and taste savory. Not even eggs are what they first may seem like since you could actually be eating Mignon chocolate eggs. They're real eggshells filled with solid almond-hazelnut nougat. Makes those ordinary Easter eggs look pretty hollow, amirite? Eh? Yeah, that was a bad one.

Strange sun behavior

In wintertime there can be months end where the Sun refuses to show itself above the horizon. And after a long dark winter when the spring finally comes, it refuses to go down.

Our sun is like that moody teenager who has the most awful sleeping schedule and plays loud music at 3 a.m for others to suffer. I mean, what a spoiled ball of gas!

Weird events

Finns have plenty of weird events and competitions, like who can pretend to play an imaginary guitar the best, swat the most mosquitoes or throw a rubber boot the furthest. In addition to these wonders, we also have a million gazillion music festivals every summer. And yes, I did make up that number.

I honestly think that with all the light we get in summer our brains start to go a little hyper. That would explain a lot.

Considering all of this, it's fortunate that Finnish nature is very uncomplicated. You'll just need to ask yourself few questions.
